Basic Fire Fighting

Whether taken as part of BST or as a standalone module this 16-hour course is designed for all seafarers. A mariner successfully completing this course will be able to minimize the risk of fire, maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire, and fight and extinguish shipboard fires. This training includes one day of classroom theory and one day of live-fire training at either Fremont Maritime Services – India Tango or the Washington State Fire Training Academy.

The Scuttlebutt:

Any mariner who successful completes this course satisfies the training required by Section A-VI/1, as outlined in Table A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code as amended, and 46 CFR 11.202(b)(2); AND the Basic Fire Fighting training requirements of 46 CFR 11.205(d) and 11.401(g)(1) for an officer endorsement; AND the Fire Fighting training requirements of 46 CFR 13.207, 13.307, 13.407, or 13.507 for any Tankerman endorsement.

What to bring:

Compass Courses recommends jeans/sweatpants and a t-shirt to wear under the bunker gear and a clean change of clothes. Synthetic clothing, tank tops, and shorts are not recommended. A tight seal on the facemask is required for safety – participants must be clean shaven.
