How do I apply for a license or AB?
The USCG handles all applications for original and renewal of ratings (licenses) and endorsements. Our first suggestion always is to visit the USCG’s National Maritime Center (NMC) website. The process of applying for your first USCG rating or endorsement can be a little confusing. You will need to download and complete an application, get a TWIC card, have a physical, take a drug test, and meet the sea service and training requirements. The Checklists available on the NMC’s website are great tools to help you and minimize delays in your application’s approval process.
What do I need for working as an AB on Washington State Ferries?
To work on the WSFs as AB you will typically need BST and a MMC endorsed for AB with PSC/Lifeboatman. To confirm the requirements we suggest you look at the WSF website or contact the Inland Boatman Union, Puget Sound Region located in Seattle, WA.
Do I need PSC/Lifeboatman with AB?
Yes, All AB ratings MUST qualify as Lifeboatman or Lifeboatman-Limited. Always check with your employer or potential employer for the specific requirements for the Deck or Engineering jobs.
